Establish an awareness of the capability of KAREN to provide the infrastructure for eResearch

Run a short series of workshops at which the Service Provider’s researchers who are using KAREN present to colleagues, and demonstrate how KAREN facilitates collaborative research and supports the innovation lifecycle. Coverage to include the areas of:

  • Data and information creation
  • Preservation and curation
  • Search and navigation
  • Virtual research communities
  • Networks, compute and data storage
  • AAA (authentication, authorisation and accounting), middleware and DRM (digital rights management) April 2008

An e-Research Action Plan informed by an institutional audit of eResearch activities and supporting ICT infrastructure Conduct interviews with research groups to identify the principal obstacles and opportunities for e-Research in existing and new projects, with a focus on the further use of KAREN as well as the development of eResearch techniques. April – June 2008 Establish sufficient expertise within the Service Provider to enable KAREN to be used effectively and develop a culture amongst educators and researchers that includes skills and capabilities in advanced distributed information management and global network technology. Creation, development and delivery of a series of workshops on the practical issues related to using KAREN by researchers and educators for both research, teaching and learning focusing on: i) the preservation and management of research information; ii) KAREN's information technology infrastructure and access; and iii) the design of suitable pedagogical approaches and using KAREN to support collaboration in e-Learning. April – August 2008 Ensure that the use of KAREN is not inhibited by lack of skills or access to expertise - On going training of IT Services staff to ensure that a range of people can provide assistance to the Service Provider’s staff using KAREN. - Creation and development of user education materials for the Service Provider’s staff to use the Access Grids and other resources. April – October 2008
