John McEwan, of AgResearch, New Zealand, gave an overview of the project funded by REANNZ, which, as part of an international consortium, sheep genome data was assembled via KAREN. This is a particularly significant scientific advance, because it allows the checking of DNA at birth for sex limited, difficult to measure traits or traits which can develop late in life. All plants and animals in New Zealand are candidates for such testing; and for dairy cattle, there is a predicted 50-100% genetic gain. John spoke of the importance of KAREN to the project. Not only was the sequencing carried out from widely diverse geographical locations (Otago and Texas), but the data collected and used for repeated masking processes required ongoing and repeated transfers over the network. It was not the initial data transfer which was the major data transfer issue, but the storage, transfer and annotation as the project continued. John's last words on the screen were "Thanks KAREN & the team".

Brigette Hawkins of Medialab, New Zealand spoke about the traceability and environmental monitoring of effluent levels on farms by the use of a sensor network. The system allows the farmer to know what is happening on the farm and to make the best actions for sustainability on daily basis.
