Plan finish date: April 2009

Identify What’s Possible

A review of the way advanced networks and e-Research techniques are being used in other countries to support research in fields similar to those in which the Service Provider specialises. Also included will be a review of what other NZ organisations are doing with KAREN, with a particular focus on those with which the Service Provider might do collaborative research. This will be documented in a short briefing report for the Service Provider’s senior management team and used as input into the next step. April/May 2008

Identify what Crop & Food could do

Run workshops with the Service Provider’s staff to identify KAREN’s potential. This will use the findings of the above review to stimulate brainstorming of ways KAREN could be used to support a) new or enhanced national and international collaborations and, b) new research through improved access to data and/or computing power. Ideas generated will be written up and, through further analysis, opportunities will be identified and any obstacles to their implementation will be defined in a written report for the Service Provider’s senior management team. August 2008 Develop Action Plan Consultation with the Service Provider’s scientists and other staff to develop a set of actions to support identified opportunities and remove obstacles. Integration of this action plan into the Service Provider’s strategic planning, operational and financial processes. Communication of the action plan to the Service Provider’s scientists and management. A range of communication tools will be explored, including the use of a shared project workspace and in-house wiki to create a record of collective understanding and experiences relating to e-Research tools. September/ October 2008 Professional Development for KAREN Champion Learning, development and mentoring for KAREN champion, including if possible the establishment of a community of practice for KAREN champions across NZ (using AccessGrid, other collaboration technology and perhaps an annual face to face meeting) as well as attendance at national/international fora on e-Research learning and technologies. April 2008 to March 2009 Provide Project Support Provide assistance on a project-by-project basis in preparing KAREN-related components of funding bids, training on KAREN/e-Research technologies, and integration of e-Research techniques into research projects. September 2008 to March 2009
