TelstraClear is proud to offer a trial IPTV solution to KAREN members and the National Education Network pilot.

KAREN provides an ideal medium for this technology providing for multicast streams over a high speed and low latency network. The initial broadcast of free to air TV and a selection of radio broadcasts is designed to test the potential use of this medium for educational use.

We are seeking feedback from participants as to its value and are offering the ability to have your content broadcast too!

How to view

To view the multicast IPTV streams you will need two things:

  1. a multicast enabled edge device connecting to KAREN and multicast enabled throughout your network (note that currently Allied Telesys devices do not currently support MBGP and MSDP)
  2. a minimum 10Mb/s connection to KAREN from your desktop
  3. VLC (videoLAN player) www.videolan.org - available for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows

Once you have VLC installed, launch the client and then -

   * Choose Media > Open Network
   * Select UDP from the Protocol list
   * For "Address" enter 233.36.229.1
   * For the "Port" enter 1234
   * Select Play

Note: The MPEG-2 Multicast signal is streamed at full TV rates - 2.5Mb/s - and generally requires a minimum connection of 10Mbps to KAREN in order to work properly.
