Projects using KAREN

  • Number of projects using KAREN: 5

Lincoln University will be using the Institutional Capability Build Fund (ICBF) investment to work with a number of projects to increase the use of KAREN and eResearch. The work for each project will follow an overall Project Plan designed to meet each researcher's requirements and provide case study material showing how the use of KAREN and eResearch in general can aid collaboration and provide enhanced modelling and analytical resources.

Bio-Protection Research Centre - Computer modelling of invasive species populations

The research team headed by Sue Worner at the Bio-Protection Research Centre is developing computer models and methods that identify potential invasive insects and pests and predict the regional spread of new species incursions in New Zealand. Part of this work is based on a novel application of artificial neural networks and other machine learning programs that learn to detect patterns in data. In support of this development, the Lincoln ICBF project is implementing a high performance computing cluster - a Condor grid.

For initial testing, the Condor grid has been implemented in small scale and the ICBF project is configuring a framework to execute the neural net training algorithms. Once the testing phase has been completed, the pool of machines that constitute the Condor grid will be expanded to include many other machines connected to the University network. The Lincoln university Condor grid could then be made accessible to other sites via KAREN and the internet.

Economic Value of Ecosystems Services

The ICBF project will help the EVES project to deliver geospatial data about Ecosystem Services to the public and other researchers. The current prototype website will be restructured to provide (i) standard web content alongside the official BPRC website and (ii) a specialized GIS service with online mapping and exposed web services from a server located on the Lincoln University campus accessible over KAREN and the internet.

Agricultural Research Group on Sustainability

The ICBF project is helping ARGOS to experiment with collaboration technologies, particularly Sakai, to better share data between research collaborators.

Spatial Yield of Tourism

With the help of the ICBF project, collaborators in this project can now conduct virtual research meetings using EVO and share project data using Sakai.

Lincoln eResearch Forum

Lincoln University is an active member of the Lincoln eResearch Forum which was started in February 2009 to help with collaboration and dissemination amongst the Lincoln Cluster of research organisations.

Current Activity

We have appointed an eResearch Assistant to work with a variety of projects around the university to help increase the uptake of eResearch and our use of KAREN. Work is currently ongoing in the areas of grid computing and the provision of geospatial data.
