This page provides answers to some common questions about the myKAREN service trial. If you are participating in this trial, please feel free to log-in to the wiki and add any new questions you have to the list.
This information is targeted at participants of the myKAREN service trial.
KAREN, the Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network, provides very fast, unrestricted broadband between research and education organisations in New Zealand and around the world. Some private companies in New Zealand are also connected to KAREN to provide content and services to KAREN members.
myKAREN is a proposed service which will allow people who belong to organisations that are connected to KAREN to access KAREN from their home. This service will extend the reach of KAREN beyond the school, university or research organisation, allowing people to participate in learning and research at home.
The myKAREN proof of concept trial will allow you to access New Zealand content and services available on KAREN for free over your home internet connection.
The service will be trialled over three stages. This is first stage. The purpose of this stage of the trial is to test the technical and commercial features of the service, and understand how people will use the service.
If this stage of the trial is successful, we may expand the trial to more users and service providers.
The trial will begin in early March and end on 30th April 2009
This stage of the trial is limited to one internet service provider (ISP) and about 10 participants in the Palmerston North area. The internet service provider is Inspire Net. The participants are from Palmerston North Boys’ High School and Massey University. These participants were chosen because they already have a home internet account with Inspire Net.
No one else can join the trial at this stage.
First we need to make sure you are from a KAREN member. To verify this you need to provide your internet service provider account and contact details to your myKAREN coordinator who will confirm who you are and pass your details to the trial service provider, Inspire Net.
Inspire Net will then contact the account holder for the home internet account to confirm that the account holder is happy that their account can be used in the trial.
Important: - Please be aware that you will be issued with a new IP address for your home ISP connection to participate in this trial.
You should be able to start using myKAREN through your home computer and internet connection as soon as Inspire Net has informed you that the myKAREN connection is working at your home.
The myKAREN proof of concept trial will be provided to you free of charge. You will be responsible for paying for your existing internet service to your home during the trial.
During this trial, you will be able to access any New Zealand content and services available on KAREN without incurring data charges. In general, this means you can access any resources that are available through the websites of KAREN members and content and service providers, including your school or university. This includes video, podcasts, documents and other similar resources.
However, sometimes resources posted on a website available over KAREN are actually stored somewhere else. It is not always easy to tell which resources are available over KAREN. To help you get around this problem, we suggest you select from the list of content and services available at: http://www.wiki.karen.net.nz/index.php/MyKAREN_service_trial
To really test this service, we’d like you to access as much high bandwidth content and services as you can from the list at the link above, such as podcasts, video and streaming during the trial.
This trial is limited to New Zealand content and services. For technical reasons, we cannot guarantee that any information you download from overseas organisations connected to KAREN will run over myKAREN.
myKAREN will not improve the speed of your internet connection. The speed of the myKAREN service is wholly dependent upon the upload and download speeds you have signed up to with your internet service provider.
If you need help, you can contact the technical support services provided by your internet service provider. If your internet service provider cannot answer your question, please contact your myKAREN coordinator.
The myKAREN coordinators are: Massey University: - Kate Nolan-Tong – c.a.nolan-tong@massey.ac.nz Palmerston North Boys’ High School: - Mike Taiuru - miket@pnbhs.school.nz

To help us understand how the myKAREN trial is working, we would really like you to share your experiences with us.
We have set up a page on the KAREN wiki where you can write about your experiences of the trial on a regular basis at: http://www.wiki.karen.net.nz/index.php/MyKAREN:_Feedback
At the end of the trial we will ask you to complete a short survey to give us your overall feedback. This information will be used to evaluate the success of the trial and will impact how the final myKAREN service will operate.
