What is MoRST?

The Ministry of Research, Science and Technology (MoRST) is a New Zealand government department which develops research and innovation policies. MoRST manages the publicly funded part of the RS&T system on behalf of the Government.

What does MoRST do?

MoRST works at the high level of policies, strategies and statistics. We contract other agencies to manage the funding of research and innovation projects carried out by research organisations.

MoRST main responsibilities are to:

• Manage the Government’s research, science and technology (RS&T) investment;

• Provide policy advice on RS&T issues;

• Encourage innovation and commercialisation of scientific and technological knowledge and ideas; and

• Collaborate with other government organisations where RS&T intersects with their work.
